RE: Towing Extra Large Toy Haulers

Yep the D/A will pull it because it has the same drive train as all GM diesels. Sure he's okay with that load...probably only a couple/three thousand pounds over weight. No doubt he's a member of the "pulls fine never had a problem crowd." Nobody said you had to be smart to pull a 5er.

RE: Towing with a 1/2 ton truck?

You might be within specs, but it will not be a pleasant experience...BTDT. I'd opt for a bigger truck, and, if you'll be doing any serious long hauls, a diesel.

RE: Tires

Good question. Many RVs come with them from the factory. Many RVers have problems, many do not have problems. Seems to be the luck of the draw...so far mine have been fine.

RE: RAWR,FAWR,GVWR,GCWR,CCC,UVW-My head is spinning

The GVWR is usually just a number that the manufacture thinks is a comfy ride on the stock suspension. Mav This is totally absurd advice and should be ignored. Read ANY document that discusses towing (your manual, the manufacturer's brochure, Trailer Life, RV Living, etc) and ALL will say do not, under any circumstances, exceed the GVWR. It is the maximum your truck can weigh fully loaded including everything...(pin weight, hitch weight, passengers, cargo, extra fuel, tools, etc).

RE: Pulling Weight Advise

Boy- You hit that on a head. Sorry I put a 5 on my truck instead of the $40,000 i meant. It isn't the first time I have got this reaction. I've learned my lesson. To those chumps out there--Enjoy your fulltime RV Sites!!!!! You put a stigma on all RV's that is a pain in the !!!! Don't let them get to you. They do this to all of us. I was told we were over weight with our 2 ton diesel! Told we were over weight with our 3/4 ton diesel with 5,000 pound helper springs installed! Don't take it personally. :) I hope you continue to post here. There are some really nice people on here, who will give some good advice. :) You were over weight...your little 3/4 ton Dodge was way over it's GVWR and GCWR hauling that Cameo around. Those helper springs did not do a thing except make you feel better. Some times the information here is worth what you pay for it...nothing.

RE: Pulling Weight Advise

.......and he gets these.."it can pull anything" answers....... Can you tell us which of the responses (prior to yours) advised that he could "pull anything"? You expect an answer good luck. I have taken issue with them on this 3/4 1 ton issue for quite some time, they ignore the facts or fail to do there homework and give advice on some good hard facts instead of reading door stickers, but that is the easy way to see there name in lights so to speak. I will never tell someone they can tow overweight, but there are options, and I won't tell someone like some do a dually and a dodge is the only way they can go because fords are ugly.Thats great information. The door stickers are "hard facts" what else would they be? I am continuously amazed at the number of people on this forum who know way more than the phd mechanical engineers who design and build these trucks.

RE: Pulling Weight Advise

Remember just one thing its safety not door tags. True...and the numbers on the door will keep you out of trouble if you adhere to what the engineers on the manufacturer's payroll decide are safe for that particular vehicle.

RE: Additives

My God! You've gotta love the uninformed and/or deliberate trolls who spew the the "No Additives Needed" mentality. Please just point me to the cliff and let me walk off now! I'm always amazed at the vast store of knowledge among our members...guys who are so much smarter than the engineers who design, build and warranty these trucks. My owner's manual says not to use additives because they may harm the engine and void the warranty. That's pretty clear to me.

RE: Cargo Weight Rating - please define.

You guys are making this waaaaay too difficult. All you have to do is read the Tire and Loading Information sticker, located on the left rear door panel. This sticker was mandated for model year 2005 and later for ALL vehicles, not just trucks. It says, "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed____pounds." It is self explanatory. Right, he has a 1999 GMC Sierra 2500 and he said "My truck has a cargo weight rating of 2247 lbs, please define what this is." :R The definition above is correct...the OP did not mention it was a 1999 model. We would not know the year without checking the profile which often does not include the vehicle or trailer.

RE: Is our tow vehicle adequate?

The Pin weight will put you over the trucks gvwr limit and you will probably be very close (if not over) the trucks gcwr limit. For that size 5th I would recommend a minimm 3500 DRW Good advice. You can put all the over load springs, air bags, bigger tires, etc on that truck and you'll still be just as over weight.

RE: 2005 chevy LT 3500 DRW

That is WAY WAY too much. Sent you a PM.

RE: Where can I find my max tow weight?

Your "true" tow capacity is the GCWR minus the actual weight of the tow vehicle.

RE: closet weight police

The reason the 19k caught your friend's eye is that most of us tow at or near GW and that is too much weight for most duallys. If you are at your truck's GW with 1400 PW, add 1000# for the toy hauler and you'll be that much more over. Might as well bite the bullet and get the correct truck for your TH now...you will eventually anyhow, no matter how much you try to convince yourself what you have will work.

RE: Landing Gear Motor

Call Lippert, a tech can help you install it...they are very good about that.

RE: Another "can I tow this" question!!

Typically is when it comes to a 3/4 ton truck. You will get lots of posters telling you it is safe to two at some number or another. from practical experience if you tow over the trucks GVWR it will require a lot of changes to do so safely and the end results will not be very satisfying. There's a difference between safely and comfortably. I will agree that towing at or below GVWR will generally result in a comfortable tow, but you are far from being unsafe if your vehicle is well maintained, and you decide to venture into that gray area between GVWR and GAWR, which generally gives you an extra 1000 to 1500lbs of additional carrying "capacity." Unless you are a mechanical engineer, working for one of the big three, you cannot say it is "far from being unsafe," that's your opinion. Further translation...the 'gray' area puts you 1000 to 1500 over the GVWR as determined by the manufacturer.

RE: How do you protect your carpet from slide-out rollers?

I have four slides and no marks on any of the carpet...could there be an adjustment?

RE: Air Ride Hitch or 5th Airborne

Both will work, the air hitch a little better than the air pin box...but not 3 1/2 times better. We have the 5th Abn.

RE: Visit to Open Range Factory

Most mid range 5th wheels in the 34' range (Cedar Creek, Silverback, Montana, Mountaineer, Everest, Challanger, Big Horn, Cardinal, Prairie Schooner, Big Sky, Hitch Hiker, etc) will have GVWRs around 14k to 16k. Top of the line rigs (Teton, Excel Suites/Mobil Suites/Select Suites, etc) will vary from 17.5k to well over 20k. IMHO, 11k is too light for a 'high quality' unit. A unit that light has had some corners cut or cheaper and lighter materials used. FWI, I have also heard that the quality is not good on the Open Range 5th wheels. They look good, but cannot pass an up close and personal inspection.
Blaster Man 04/13/08 06:41pm Fifth-Wheels
RE: Doubletree Select Suites

We looked seriously at those 5ers. They are very nice and very well built. We ruled them out because they would take a 3500 dually as a minimum, most likely something bigger to stay within the specs for the truck.

RE: Help, Need Towing Capacity for truck.

You are getting a good bit of advice...lots of it bad. Look at the Tire and Loading Information sticker on the left rear door post of your truck. It will tell you what your truck's cargo capacity is.
